Handy facts to help you prepare for the arrival of new puppies.
- Dog pregnancies last around 63 days
- After three to four weeks the dog shows increased appetite; its abdomen and nipples enlarge.
- At seven weeks, nesting behaviour begins as the dog prepares a place to give birth. Set a box with bedding in a private place. It’ll need to be fed more.
- Right before birth, it may be restless, and lose its appetite. It will lick around its vagina to stimulate birth. It can take several hours between each puppy, but seek veterinary help immediately if there is constant unproductive straining.
- Finally, be prepared to feed, vaccinate, worm up to 10 puppies!
